Toured up to around 10500' on Red Mtn. Snow below 8500', apart from steeper NW-aspect micro-slopes, had been cooked on previous days. There was a melt-freeze crust on the surface and underlying snow was heavy. Weather was calm and warm but solar input was limited by thin clouds. ATL, a 10-20mph SW wind was finding almost no snow available for transport. Above 8500' on N aspect, the surface snow was still cold and loose. At 9900', N aspect we probed the pack: HS 160. 20 cm thick firm layer 80 down from surface, then softer layers below. Above 10100', almost-supportable windboard predominated.
