Went up Wisherd and skied bowl 3, up bowl 2, and down some glades. Moderate winds transporting available snow, with high clouds today. Didn’t find any stiff wind slabs besides in the most exposed terrain. Dug a pit at 7240’ on a NE aspect and found two layers of surface hoar buried about a foot deep and a crust with facets below it, about 1.5’ deep. The HS was about 140cm where we dug and is locked up below the crust/facet combo. ECTN14 failing in the buried surface hoar. The surface hoar would have been more reactive if there was a slab above it. I believe the surface hoar will be mostly found in areas that did not get blasted by the wind in the past week. Keep the buried hoar layer in mind once it snows/blows again! Solar aspects have been cooked by the recent sun. Didn’t see any obvious signs of slab avalanches from this season, even in the most wicked terrain. However there may have been an old crown below a NE cliff band in bowl 3…take a look at the photo and see what you think.
