Quick report
Departed Alpental Lot 4 parking lot 8:45 AM, with overcast skies and heavy rain. Rain started turning to snow around 3.5K ft elevation. Skinned up to Chair Peak basin ultimately via the summer trail. Waterfall area required taking skis off to cross open creek. This area has not filled in this season, and not anything new. Reached the Snow Lake Divide around 9:45 AM, and visibility was poor w/ 1"/hr heavy snowfall with big wet flakes. There were 2 to 3 inches of new slow observed at 4.5K ft elev. Continued up to Chair Peak basin and Thumb Rock, with new snow depth increasing to 4 to 5 inches in the basin below Thumbtack Couloir. Heavy snowfall, and poor visibility, but no/light winds at 5.5K ft. Did not ski North aspect of Chair Peak due to poor visibility, and skied back down to Source Lake. The new snow was poorly bonded to the water saturated (unfrozen) layer underneath. Ski cuts on 30 to 35 degree roll overs triggered isolated wet slabs. Propagation was one to two ski lengths, and slide length was limited. Traveled cautiously through the upper glades, and ultimately was able to ski consistent linked turns in open face above the Snow Lake Divide traverse. Chair Peak Basin apron was an enjoyable smooshy ski, and was happy to have 110 underfoot.
