Near Cabin Peak

Generally shallower snowpack than in Lick Creek Canyon. Probing around 7100 feet in Lick Creek yesterday showed 1.8 to 2m of snow, while the same elevations above Warm L ake had only about 1.3 to 1.5 m of snow. Riding conditions were nice with about 4-6 inches of soft and somewhat faceted snow on top of a very consolidated 1F layer on the northern aspects. Almost everything had a bit of surface hoar. Our group experienced 2 collapses today. One in northern facing, rocky terrain near 7600 feet, and the other on the ridgeline at about 8000 feet. After feeling the collapse at 7600 feet I dug a hand pit where I found large grain facets (about 3mm) about 40cm down. They were just below the supportable 1F layer and on top of what looked and felt like a rain crust. With that we decided not to ski the line we had been looking at, but continued up. I dug multiple hand pits on our way up and each showed the facets buried deeper( 80cm to 1m deep) and smaller grained (about 1.5mm) Solar aspects began having rollerballs and small wet loose sluffs by the end of the day up to about 7500 feet.
