Tuckerman Ravine

This past weekend Tuckerman Ravine saw crowds and spring-like conditions on Saturday. On Sunday, temperatures began to drop along with elevated wind making most slopes icy and firm. At 2:00 pm Hermit Lake had dropped to 29 degrees with the summit reporting 18 degrees and west wind at 36 mph. This cooling trend continued overnight and this morning (Monday 4/22/2024) elevations down to 1600 feet were below freezing.

The condition of the snowpack is generally stable, even with the small amount of snow that the summit received overnight on Saturday. Most runs in Tuckerman Ravine have been skied and many areas have moguls from the high traffic. On Saturday old debris from some small, wet loose avalanches were noted below the headwall, along with obviously undermined and collapsing snow near the waterfall in the middle of The Lip ski run. With limited sunshine for the weekend, the snowpack continued to consolidate but melting was limited.

Lower in the ravine where temperatures have been above freezing for the past week, areas of waterholes and undermine snow exist. The Little Headwall is open and unpassable, making the Tuckerman Ravine Trail the only exit from the Bowl.
