I went back to the site of the avalanche I set off yesterday to investigate. My compression test revealed the snow ran just below the rime crust layer that formed on the 27th of January, documented here. I was surprised the rime crust was so well preserved. The bottom third of this thin snowpack is a facet factory with several decipherable crusts still present. Throughout much of the range, without a sled or skis under my feet and a little hop I was sinking into the basal facets.
