At our targeted site we observed initiation and propagation on a layer of fist hard precipitation particles 45cm below the surface. This layer appears to have been buried by firmer wind slabs as wind speed increased during the storm cycle. Intense blowing snow obscured the upper mountain and we did not venture higher in Hillman’s or the bowl, so we did not observe terrain more exposed to the wind, but the snow surface at our test site is likely not representative of snow higher on the mountain. Still, this strong over weak structure is a good data point and something worth targeting for observation higher in the terrain when conditions allow. We observed cracking on a small test slope in Hillman’s historic runout. See photos.
