Quick report
Hiked and snowshoed up to Stuart peak on Saturday. Weather was clear and sunny all day with no wind. Temperatures ranged from 26 to 40 degrees. We did not hit snow until 6500 feet, where there were large, shallow patches. At 7000 feet, (the wilderness boundary sign) there was continuous old crusty snow, 22cm deep. We had to put our snowshoes on at the Stuart Peak saddle, about 200 yards from the summit. At the saddle and up the north-facing slope of Stuart (7400-7600 feet) there was 50cm of snow with a layer of surface hoar on top. The true summit was mostly wind scoured. Looking down into the Rattlesnake wilderness, there was very little snow except on north-facing aspects. Anything south-facing was nearly bare.
