Backside Mt. A

Quick report

Playing in the snow on the south side of Mt.A. Things were CRUSTY, as to be expected early in the day but we managed to get some pretty darn O.K. turns in for our exit. Pit dug near the top of the second bowl, right about at the skier's boundary to the Mt. A resort. Noted that there had been significant wind loading in this area from prevailing winds from he south over the last week. There were noted instabilities in the snowpack but overall it seems to be consolidating into a healthier, more cohesive snopack. See photos to notice that the top 2 cm was actively breaking and sliding on the slopes over 30 degrees. While not a problem right now, could quickly become one with new snow depositing on this layer. On this northerly aspect, the surface was harboring surface hoar crystals well into the day, which may pose problems into the future. You can see the snopilt info for details on the pit findings.
