- Collapsing, Poor Snowpack Structure
Rec 2 Avy class toured up to Flagstaff mountain via Empire Pass for some moving observations. At ~9000' We noticed large facets that had formed overnight which were still intact by the end of the day. The snowpack is very shallow at this elevation: 20cm on a SE aspect, 40cm on a NW aspect. We experienced collapsing on several different aspects. The sheltered snow in the west facing trees is still soft but is turning into facets.
