Quick report
We found a mixed bag of snow conditions throughout our tour, with localized sun crusts on solar aspects and more widespread melt/freeze conditions throughout the zone. Near-surface faceting was observed widely on polar aspects which made for decent skiing conditions on northerly aspects but will present an issue when we get another load. Localized pockets of well-developed surface hoar were also observed within tree-covered terrain around 9,500' on N facing terrain. We dug a pit on a NE aspect at 9,300' with total HS of 62cm. We found a largely right-side-up snowpack ranging from fist hard to 1F, all sitting on a 5cm layer of extremely loose basal facets. Extended column test resulted in ECTP21, with the slab failing on the facets at the bottom of the snowpack. This layer may also become problematic as we add more load to the pack with another storm.
