Our party left WMR at the bottom of Ridge Run and skinned up to the top of Skook Face. Top of Skook Face showed thin (3-4 inch) stubborn windslabs on the north aspects, isolated to just below ridge lines. Cracking was isolated to just beyond skis while testing these slabs. At the top of Skook Face, our group (level 2 avalanche class) dug 2 pits: one in the area exposed to wind and one in an area more sheltered from the wind. The pit that was sheltered from the wind had snow depth of 150cms and resulted in an ECTX. In the pit that was more exposed, snow depth was 170cms and our stability tests had results of ECT N 29, failing on a layer of buried surface hoar 30-35 cms below the surface. Once we found this surface hoar layer, we did another ECT to see how it would react and got a result of ECT N 16 on the same surface hoar layer. We continued to seek out this surface hoar layer and were able to find it in various hand pits as we progressed westward along the ridge.
