A weak snowpack structure of surface hoar buried 2 to 3 feet deep have created reactive avalanche conditions. Signs of obvious snowpack instability may not be present before slopes avalanche. An avalanche was remotely triggered in this area today, meaning it was triggered from a distance away in lower angle terrain connected to steeper slopes above.
A large D2 avalanche was triggered remotely by another group riding in low angle treed terrain. No one was caught.Snowpack
January 28 buried surface hoar (size 10mm and needle forms) was observed almost 3 feet down from the surface. At 6000ft on a W -SW aspect slope, snowpack tests showed propagtion across the column with moderare force: ECTP 18. This same pit location also had the V-day (2/14) surface hoar (8mm) down about 70 or a little over 2 feet deep, did not observe any test results on this layer.
