While skiing an east facing chute at 8300’, I triggered a wind slab about 1’ deep and 25’ wide, which ran downhill entraining snow and triggering more 6”-1’ deep pockets. This slide ran around 500’ to the apron. The snow was wind affected on all aspects and all elevations, with loaded aspects cracking frequently. Today, the snow was firmer and “surfier” than previous days. The cracks we saw on the skin track were traveling further than previous days. While digging a very quick handpit at 8300’, I noticed surface hoar, and interestingly, some faceting of the snow grains just above the bed surface, which in this area was old, hard, wind board.
