Quick report

Avalanche on ENE slope in Big Sheep Basin, triggered by a skier.

Avalanche

We skinned up a ENE facing slope above the Big Sheep WAH hut. At about 7200ft we skirted close to an open slope and triggered a wind slab D2 R2 avalanche that caught 3 people in our group. The crown varies from 1-2 feet in depth and ran about 500 feet and went down about 300 vertical feet. One person was buried to the waist, another buried to mid thigh, and another wasn't buried but was knocked off his feet. Fortunately no injuries. We should have known better, but we figured we could skirt around wind affected terrain. We got too close and made a series of mistakes. The only reason this wasn't worse was because the three people caught were on the edge of the avalanche. It was triggered by a member of our group who was just above the slide, and it went right below him as he was making a kick turn.
