Quick report
Our party decided to ski the Glider Chute off of Silver Peak on Sunday. The road was closed at the gate that precedes the Silver Creek Campground area. We parked at the closure (elevation 6,740’) and began walking just before 6:00 am. Our path followed the road to the Noble Canyon summer trail. On the trail it was mixed snow and dirt until reaching a marshy, flat area at 7,200’. From here snow cover was consistent in the treed areas. We followed another party’s tracks to a downed log that provided an easy crossing over the stream. There was a solid refreeze overnight and the snow was firm. We climbed supportable snow up the northwest ridge, eventually following the ramp to the peak. Above 10,000 feet there was a trace of new snow left from the snow showers that had passed through earlier in the weekend. From the peak we could see some old wet, loose avalanches that had run on east facing aspects in the direction of Tryon Peak and Ebbetts Pass. We descended just after 11:00. The snow in the chute was starting to soften but had not yet ripened into perfect corn. Conditions on the apron below the chute held better corn snow. No obvious signs of recent rapid warming.
