Skied Judah and Donner Lake run starting @9am. Weather toggled between winter snow showers and warm spring sun all day. The 12” of new snow that fell yesterday was soft in the morning, with the March sun making it a bit denser but still enjoyable by the afternoon. I triggered a small wind slab avalanche just below Judah ridge, and we saw a shallow slab avalanche further downslope from an earlier party (see Pics 1 & 2). Both only failed and ran on the steepest small pitches in the zone, 35-40 deg.
Avalanche
Triggered a D1.5 R1 wind slab avalanche on the east aspect @8200’ just below Judah ridge. It broke about 1’ deep, 40’ wide, and ran about 60’ downslope. The slide was expected, very slow moving, and only ran on the steepest portion of the slope (35-40 deg) just below the cornice (Pic 1) An earlier party triggered a shallow D1 R2 slab avalanche on a steep, mid-slope cliffy section about 300’ vert below Judah ridge (Pic 2) Buried debris from earlier in the storm ran ~200’ vert from the ridge (Pic 3)
