Quick report

Cracking
isolated

We observed small cornices with cracks along the top on other slopes along the ridge. Weather was windy with blowing snow., a couple inches fell today. We were traveling in low angle terrain with occasional short, steep slopes in the east bowls Overall, we expected wind slabs and did the ski cut on a lower slope out of curiosity after seeing cracks and cornice earlier in the run.

Avalanche

We ski cut a wind loaded NE facing slope on “Sun Rock Ridge” in the far east bowls at 3 pm. The avalanche was about 20 meters wide, 12 -18 inch crown down to last week’s sun crust. It ran into the trees at the base of the short slope. D1 category, it could have knocked down a skier and trapped them against the trees at the base of the slope. No one was caught or injured.
