Quick report
Warm temperatures on the pass - hovering at and above freezing the pass for several hours. Low clouds/fog combined with periods of intense sun created some greenhouse effect, contributing to warming snow surfaces. By noon, new snow was very much upside down where I traveled on south through east aspects. Combined with settlement over the last day, new snow was becoming more cohesive and "slabby," although it is not a slab yet where I was and I still did not see any cracking or collapsing. Snow along ridgelines had some wind effect but was mostly soft (fist/fist plus), and drifts were up to 20". I had several moderate and broken hand shears in drifted snow about 8-10 inches down, but nothing alarming. Another day of similar warm temperatures and some sun will contribute to slab development. This could be problematic on shady and protected middle elevation slopes where well-preserved faceted snow exists from the January drought.
Steep and rocky slopes in the sun were shedding in loose wet fashion and rollerballs were easy to initiate on steep sunny slopes. On one steep rollover on a SE aspect around 9400 feet, I was able to get some very small slab-like movement on the buried crust. It was slow, sluggish, and didn't go far, but notable to see some movement on the buried crust.
It seems we are on an increasing-hazard trend as recent storm snow settles. Continue to assess steep slopes carefully tomorrow as the snowpack continues to adjust.
For what it's worth, tomorrow is Friday the 13th...
