Collapsing
isolated

A thin, faceted snowpack exists in this area. You're most likely to find the persistent slab problem on slopes where wind has stiffened the snow, adding meat to the slab that is resting on weak snow underneath. However, unstable snowpack test results on sheltered mid-elevation slopes indicate this is still problematic in sheltered areas. 

We experienced a few very small collapses, but traveled over a lot of previously untouched snow where 11/30 existed at the base of the snowpack.

Cold and clear. -20F in Smiley, -14 F as I drove over the pass. Felt like we climbed out of the inversion around 8,000', with upper elevation temps in the upper teens to low 20s F (estimated) . Winds were dead calm, a unique treat in the Boulders.

Snowpack

SW aspect at 9,200':
HS: 30-35cm
ECTP 14, ECTN 15. CPST 48 and 54 SF. All down 20cm on 11/30 weak layer

W aspect at 9,300':
HS: 55-60cm
ECTP 20, 24. CPST 20/100 and 22/100, both END. All down 40cm on 11/30 weak layer

The upper 10-20cm of the snowpack is a highly variable mess. Depending on aspects and elevation you'll find a single crust or a few stacked crusts with intercalated facets. Most of these crusts are MFcr, but there is also an IFrc in this package at lower and the low end of middle elevations. SH from 12/15ish and after is variably preserved. I found several areas where this SH was sitting on a 1cm MFcr, with 3-5cm of FCsf on top. Shaking the recently fallen and faceted FCsf off this crusty package, it looked like much of this SH was still standing. On upper elevation shaded slopes there are no crusts in this upper bit of the snowpack, just a stack of very weak FCsf. 

Widespread evidence of recent wind transport visible on most slopes. N/NW/W winds effectively transported the 3-5cm of new snow that fell here. We experienced some very minor cracking related to these fresh drifts.
