Skied the NE facing gladed slopes of the East shoulder of Mount Rose, from 10k down to about 8300. Found a variety of snow surfaces, all somewhat wind affected, but all made for pleasant skiing. The snowpack was very supportable, and even when we stepped out of our skis, we didn’t punch through to the old snow. We did experience probably a half dozen loud collapses on our ascent, all between 8300’ and 9400’. We stopped to dig at 9900’ on an ENE aspect. HS was 100 cm at this location, with 60 cm of storm snow from the last week sitting on top of the old near surface facets. The overlying slab ranged from 1F to 1F+, and the facets were F+. We performed two ECTs and both came back ECTX, with the very strong top layer clearly limiting our ability to affect the deeper weak layers. Still, we chose to avoid the steepest, rocky, N facing entrances to the slope.
