North of Teton Pass

Today we experienced low avalanche hazard. I was unable to get the warmest slopes to move any wet loose snow even on very steep test slopes. The last 24 hours did a lot for creating a thicker, supportable crust on east facing slopes. South has a stout, supportable crust. These slopes warm during the day with direct solar input and become less supportable. North facing slopes have a thin breakable crust with cold snow underneath. When this crust warms durning the heat of the day the crust doesn't feel as breakable. On the ascent, this cold snow faciliates exellent glopping conditions.

Timing soft "corn" skiing is tricky with variable winds and temperatures. Today, that period was from 11:00 to 12:00. After that, slopes at upper elevations began to get sticky and punchy. While the price of admission is getting higher, there is still good turning out there.

There are still looming cornices out there, but many that have not already fallen have started to recede and become less overhung. This is still not a feature that you want to hang out under.

Middle elevations are following lower elevations' lead and melting out on southerly slopes, but you can still get around if slopes are lower angle. Middle elevation north is still holding good snow. Upper elevations still have great coverage except on steep south facing slopes near rocks and trees that have sped up melting.

As for avalanche danger in the coming days, I would continue to expect Low danger. Avalanches are unlikely. Continue to pay attention to warming snow, especially later on in the day. If you are seeking extreme terrain, assess any cold snow you find for a slab on top. Unsettled weather is in the forecast for the coming days, but there does not look to be much accumulation until later next week. We will see what happens.
