Quick report
We climbed the southwestern col and hiked up the ridge to Ruby Peak. On average, 3-5" of new snow from Tues-Wed storm, consistent with reports that the western edge of the zone received less snowfall from the storm. The new snow was poorly bonded to a thin, frozen base. Radiation turned it to a 4" layer of shmoo eager to move downhill with the pressure of ski edges. As it was so little, it was manageable. It point-released, like a combo of slough and wet slide. It stayed cool through Thursday, and though we were out by noon, we had not seen any rollers or pinwheels and rockfall was minimal. It may need to heal another day (today, Friday) and might feel pretty uniform by tomorrow. The cornices looked pregnant and dangerous as the little snow that had fallen was loaded onto them--easy to stay out of their path, except beware on that western col approach for the small but ripe one hanging over the climber's right. Stay safely to climber's left. The view of Owen above Green Lake off the northeastern side of Ruby looked good--hard to tell how deep the scree is though.
