Quick report
-Traveled on ridge-tops and low-angle burned glades, and some thinly covered low elevation pickup stick/jungle gym terrain. -Crowns from last week on Cameahwait and Marion Bowl were still visible, but largely filled with recent drifted snow. (Horrible light at the time for pics.) -Dueling cornices, though the ones on easterly aspects dwarfed those on westerly aspects. -While kicking off a mini-fridge sized cornice over an East-facing slope at 7000' I remotely triggered its whale-sized neighbor. No cracking or avalanching occured on the slope below. Most of the cornice did not trundle downslope. (see pics) -Thursday was clear, cold, mostly calm , though light SW winds, with moderate gusts picked up in the evening. Friday morning was cold and clear with moderate SW wind at 7460'. Wind transport was minimal due to sastrugi surface on windward slope. Small plumes of snow were visible off the likes of Mount Stimpson. High clouds moved in mid-morning. At 12:30 pm it was 32 degrees at 3870'. -Found some areas on East-facing slopes above 7000' near saddles that had funneled Easterly winds where the snowpack was less than knee-deep and consisted entirely of large facets. These areas were sometimes not much more than 100 feet away from deeply wind-loaded east-facing slopes with overhanging cornices. -Ski quality was about what you'd expect from a foot or so of 4 finger hardness slab. -Other than the touchy cornice I saw no signs of instability. Thanks to FAC and other diligent observers I knew better than to jump on those tasty-looking NE-facing steeps.
