Quick report

We traveled on N to E aspects from 9000ft up to 10500ft in the June Lake backcountry. Boot pen throughout the day on N-E aspects remained at 20-30cm, with no indications of Wet Loose potential in the alpine on any aspects (no rollerballs). Weather was slightly off the forecast with moderate winds alternating from SW to NE and back again, and gusts between 11-2pm were around 40mph. Cloud cover increased into the afternoon then cleared up before coming in again at 4pm. Overall decent firm alpine riding due to consistency and absence of breakable. Once below the 9500ft line things definitely got super grabby and schmooey on any aspect. Water runnels from the rain event could be seen all the way to the top of the Negatives especially on southerlies. Rollerballs from recent days could be seen on all aspects below cliffs, but no new moving snow was observed today.

Weather was slightly different from forecast. Increasing clouds FEW-BRK by 12pm with ridgetop winds alternating drastically from SW to NE and back again on regular intervals, but staying moderate with strong gusts. Once down in the bowls and off the ridgelines, winds reduced significantly. Sky cover decreased to FEW by 2pm, then increased again to BRK by 4pm.

Snowpack

Snowpack is deep in the June Lake BC NTL/ATL on northerlies. The rain event moistened any remnant PWLs in the upper part of the 3.8M deep snowpack where we dug and probed on a NE aspect at 10500ft (we dug only 110cm down). Our pit revealed a pretty locked in and moist midpack 1F/P hard. A 10cm knife hard crust lay on the surface probably from the light refreeze overnight, and beneath that a slight density change at 30cm that revealed slight faceting under a buried wind board. A CTH result 30cm deep at this layer change was RP and barely went beyond just fracturing. Grains above and below were moist and of snowball making quality. Probing at the location revealed a stiff strong and unified snowpack down to 350cm where a sudden weakness appeared until hitting the ground at 380cm.
