Scout Peak

We traveled up in the Scout Peak area today. When we arrived early in the morning, snow conditions were variable with breakable melt freeze crusts in most areas and supportable melt freeze crust in isolated areas on solar aspects. Northerly aspects had a slightly thinner melt freeze crust on top  ( due to cloud cover and heat being trapped in) or consisted  of cold near surface facets.  This area had roughly 110 cm of HS and was just enough to bury rocks, stumps, and logs on the ground.  As we climbed up and ambient air temperatures rose, melt freeze crusts started to become weak and moist on the surface. This trend continued and on our descent it made for slow motion snowboarding as surface conditions became sticky on all aspects below 8500' all the way back to the truck. Steeper test slopes provided small pinwheels and a little buildup of moist surface snow but nothing very large. Otherwise, no signs of instability were observed within this terrain.
