The day was challenging. Lots of whumpfing and shooting crack on our way to the alpine zone. We wanna test the snowpack where there was no wind loading and wind slabs. We made to CT and our results was: 1- CTM8, 2- CTH4. 1- Pop (no drop) at 10cm deep above a crust. 2- Pop (no drop) at 30 cm deep above facets. The CTs had around 6 to 8 layers of crust/ice crust. The depth hoar seems to be consolidating. We experienced big whumpfing in the alpine on the S and SE aspect around 1500m. Other than wind slabs, There was supportive hard ice crust. We decided to leave the alpine because it was not safe. In the treeline/below treeline, you can find good snow. Ski penetration around 20-30 cm. Good runs but we were conservative because we experienced some shooting cracks and whumpfing. It was a day for exploring, improving your skill in different snow and get a tan! P.S. Sledders some of you rode in the slopes we tested and that we found significants avalanche instability clues. Please be aware for you and the people around you.
