Old Baldy

A nice day for a tour in a more easterly part of the zone. We travelled up to the summit of Old Baldy and skied mostly SE facing terrain. Above 7200ft there was significant scouring and wind effect. The summit was very cold (-10 C) and the snow was quite dry and ready for transport. The snowpack this far East is appreciably thinner. In sheltered terrain we found a mostly right side up snowpack with 20-40cm of new snow above a notice crust (solstice?). In wind scoured areas the snowpack was quite thin with many lurking rocks. Gullies and sheltered terrain offered wonderful snow for skiing with no noticeable instabilities on slopes 35 degrees. In wind affected areas we did trigger a few small soft slabs that did not propagate and ran minimally. Overall the conditions were in line with what we expected based on avy forecasts.
