Avalanche Activity

SC 07.04 New moderately bonded areas developing on SE to SW aspects above 900m. Avalanche hazard Mod.

Forecast Snow Stability: A new covering of snow will develop on most aspects but as winds strengthen deposits will be redistributed mainly onto South-East to South-West aspects. New unstable accumulations will develop in wind sheltered locations above 900 metres. Stability will be poorest where new deposits develop over steep older snow ice, with corrie rims and gully tops most affected. Older snow will become firm and icy. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: New snow showers throughout this forecasted period, falling down to the glens by morning as the freezing level drops. Winds becoming very strong from the North by morning, easing only slightly from the North-North-West by afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: Isolated snow showers above 950 metres otherwise a generally dry day. Moderate winds were from the South-West. ObservedSnowStability: The majority of the snow cover is thawing and soft but is generally well bonded. New snow is mostly shallow with deeper accumulations restricted to the highest summits towards our Northern boundary. Greatest cover is mostly found in North to East facing corries. Little snow below 950 metres. The avalanche hazard is Low.
