Avalanche Activity

Backcountry touring and snowshoe hiking call for experience in the assessment of avalanche danger and careful route selection.

In gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain slab avalanches are possible, but they can be quite large. Single winter sport participants can release avalanches as before. Avalanches can also be released in near-ground layers. The avalanche prone locations are difficult to recognise.

Snowpack Structure

The soft wind slabs are poorly bonded with the old snowpack in all aspects. Precarious weak layers exist in the snowpack in particular on shady slopes.
