Avalanche Activity

TOR for 10/2 Wet snow instabilities in recent windslab, steep N thru E to SE aspects above 800m. Weak cornices. Av Hazard Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: The snowpack will become wet and thaw at all levels through the day. During the morning, wet snow instabilities will develop in recent localised accumulations of windslab, most notably where it gains depth on steep terrain on North through East to South-East aspects, above 800 metres. Recent cornice growth will be prone to collapse. The patchy old snowpack will remain well bonded and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: It will be a wet and windy day, with rain at all levels, particularly heavy around late morning, as the freezing level rises from around 900 metres to well above the summits overnight. The strong West to South-West wind will become gale force around dawn, gradually easing to strong through the day. Observed Weather Influences: A day of scattered blustery showers, occasionally intense and wintry above 600 metres. There was a persistently strong Westerly airflow, gale force at summit levels. The freezing level gradually rose throughout the day from around 500 metres initially. ObservedSnowStability: Localised areas of unstable windslab have accumulated in wind sheltered locations, mainly affecting steep terrain above as low as 600 metres, on North through East to South-East aspects. Minor cornice growth noted above same aspects. The old patchy snowpack remains well bonded and stable throughout, firm at higher elevations. Wind exposed terrain is scoured. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
