Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Fresh unstable windslab will develop through the evening mainly on North-West to North-East aspects above 900 metres. There will be a short period of poor stability in this snow as it turns to wet snow overnight when avalanches are likely. Stability in this snow will then improve but further areas of unstable windslab will develop during the day mainly on North to East aspects above 900 metres. Fresh cornices will develop and be prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Heavy snow in the evening will turn to rain on all but the highest summits for a short time overnight followed by snow showers through the day. Gale force South-South-Easterly winds veer to the West-South-West and ease slightly in the early morning. Mostly cold with the freezing level briefly rising above the summits overnight. Observed Weather Influences: It was a cold, dry morning with light winds. The freezing level was rising through the day. ObservedSnowStability: The older snowpack has refrozen and is stable. Isolated and shallow areas of moderately bonded windslab were present this morning mainly on South and South-East aspects above 900 metres. Fresh unstable windslab was starting to develop on North-West to North-East aspects above 900 metres in the afternoon. The avalanche hazard is Low.
