Avalanche Activity

Weakly bonded old snow represents the main danger.

Avalanches can be released in the weakly bonded old snow by a single winter sport participant. This applies in particular on west, north and east facing slopes above approximately 1800 m. In some cases avalanches are medium-sized. Whumpfing sounds and the formation of shooting cracks when stepping on the snowpack can indicate the danger. In the regions neighbouring those that are subject to danger level 3 (considerable) the avalanche danger is higher.

Snowpack Structure

The snowpack will be unstable above approximately 1800 m. Distinct weak layers exist in the old snowpack. This applies especially on west, north and east facing slopes. Below approximately 1600 m as well as steep sunny slopes: The high temperatures gave rise to moistening of the snowpack. Outgoing longwave radiation during the night will be reduced. The snowpack will become moist as the day progresses.

Tendency

The weather conditions will facilitate a very slow stabilisation of the snowpack.
