Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Localised areas of unstable windslab will develop overnight and in the morning, mainly on West through North to East aspects above 900 metres with features such as gully tops and corrie rims most affected. Wet snow instabilities will develop in this windslab during the day as the temperature rises and snow turns to rain. The older snowpack will remain firm and stable. Freshly formed cornices will be prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Strong South-South-Easterly winds increase to gale force during the day. A band of snow overnight followed by further snow during the day which will gradually turn to rain at all elevations. Cold overnight with the freezing level rising above the summits in the afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: It was a dry day with moderate Southerly winds. The freezing level rose to around 700 metres. ObservedSnowStability: The older snowpack has a firm surface and good stability. Isolated and shallow areas of moderately bonded windslab are present, mainly on North to East aspects above 1100 metres with features such as gully tops and corrie rims most affected. The avalanche hazard is Low.
