In sintesi

Avalanche Danger will rise throughout today as snowfall intensity and winds increase, reaching HIGH later this afternoon for Wind Slab avalanches. Natural and human triggering of Wind Slab avalanches will become likely, with increasing concern over Storm Slabs and Loose Dry avalanching as well. Travel more conservatively as the storm progresses and especailly avoid being on or under steep wind loaded slopes.

    Snowfall intensity will pick up mid-morning and continue to increase throughout the day with rates of 1-2” an hour expected and 1-2ft of new snow possible by dark. At the same time, southwest winds will also increase with gusts reaching 85mph over ridgetops. Remember winds can build up snow much faster than it can fall from the sky. Wind Slabs will grow quickly throughout the day, becoming more and more dangerous. They will be very sensitive to human triggering and some will likely fail on their own. The current underlying snowpack made of weak facets and slick crusts could result in much larger avalanches than expected. Northerly and Easterly facing leeward terrain will be most concerning, especially below ridgelines. Use blowing snow and cornice formation as clues as to where Wind Slabs may be found. The feeling of denser snow under your feet, a hollow feel, or shooting cracks is a good indication that you’re on a wind slab, and remember these often can fail above you.  If in doubt stick to lower angle terrain or wind swept slopes or ridges.

    Later in the afternoon as more snow accumulates, soft storm slab avalanches will become more likely on steep slopes sheltered from the wind on all aspects.  Underlying faceted snow or firm crusts will make this sheltered snow even more sensitive to a human trigger.  Be especially careful of steep mid-slope convexities.

    Loose Dry sloughing will be likely in steep sheltered terrain.  Manage slough wisely, and recognize the consequences of terrain traps.

Avalanche Discussion

Talk of our shallow obstacle ridden snowpack should finally be over as this storm clears and conditions settle.  But until then, even a small avalanche could result in trauma with all the exposed or barely covered rocks and logs. Beware of the implications of terrain traps such as small trees, cliffs, and gullies where even a small avalanche could have dire consequences.    

Avalanche danger will become even greater tonight with snow fall rates increasing to 3” an hour or more, and winds increasing to 100mph over ridgetops.
