In sintesi

Sunny skies, temperatures rising above freezing, and light winds on Friday combine to mean that it will be possible to trigger small Wet Loose avalanches on steep South slopes.  These are most likely later in the day when those slopes are the warmest.

    Friday will be sunny with light wind from the Northwest.  Daytime high temperatures will climb above freezing.  These three factors check all of the boxes for Wet Loose avalanches.  Wet Loose avalanches occurr when the surface snow melts and looses cohesion.  These should be somewhat predictable as you move through terrain, and can see how much and how deep the snow is melting.  Other early signs of instability include roller balls, and small point release avalanches in very sterp terrain.

    Remember that timing and aspect are everything with these wet avalanche characters.  The likelihood of Loose Wet avalanches is greatest on the warmest slopes (steep South slopes late in the day).

Friday will be a day of transition from our recent stormy winter weather to sunny spring weather.  Temperatures will start out cool, but will rise to above freezing for much of the ski terrain.  Any instabilities will be associated with this warming.  Looking ahead to Saturday, the temperatures are forecast to be even higher, so I expect this trend of warm weather avalanche problems to continue.  Hopefully we'll have some good corn skiing for the weekend.
