Sensitive cornices and shallow wind slabs will be found on lee slopes near ridge crests. Give cornices plenty of space and steer around start zones steeper than 35 degrees where windblown snow has accumulated.

    Sensitive shallow wind slabs were observed near ridge crests on Friday and this trend will continue Saturday. Use surface clues such as textured snow and cornice formation to determine where windblown snow has accumulated. Steer around start zones under cornices and near ridge crests where the slope angle is greater than 35 degrees. 

    Cornices have grown large in some areas. Besides steering around cornices, give them plenty of space while traveling along ridgelines as they often break further back than you expect. 

    (1/7/2021) A shallow wind slab triggered in White River on a small test slope. Use small test slopes like this to gather information before committing to larger more open slopes.

Avalanche Discussion

Avalanche problems related to recent windblown snow will be the primary concern on Saturday, however, the sun is forecast to shine and loose wet surface snow may become an issue as well. Cool temperatures and high clouds building in the afternoon should limit warming and the effect the sun has on the snow surface. If you notice temperatures above freezing, wet snow surfaces, roller balls beginning to form, or trees dripping, you may be able to trigger loose wet avalanches. This will be most likely at low elevations and on steep slopes receiving direct sunshine. If you see evidence of weakening snow surfaces, avoid slopes steeper than 35 degrees and unsupported slopes such as those above cliffs and creeks.

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
