A natural avalanche cycle is expected overnight with very dangerous conditions lingering through Wednesday. Natural activity may continue in wind-loaded alpine terrain and human triggering will remain likely on all steep slopes. Steer clear of overhead hazard and give the new snow time to settle and stabilize.

    An additional 1-2ft of new snow may accumulate by Wednesday morning, bringing snow totals since Saturday close to 6ft. Although hazard will likely peak overnight during the heaviest snowfall rates, natural avalanches will remain likely at upper elevations Wednesday, especially in the early morning hours. This is a prolonged and heavy loading event and the snowpack needs time to adjust. Avalanches are most likely to fail within new and wind drifted snow, but deeper layers continue to be tested by ongoing precipitation. Very large avalanches could break several feet thick and run full track to valley bottom.

    Expect widespread and reactive slabs and choose simple terrain away from overhead hazard. The most dangerous conditions will exist in wind loaded alpine terrain. Travel on or below open slopes 35 degrees and steeper is not recommended. Gather information as you travel and carefully assess the snowpack watching for shooting cracks, collapses, and recent avalanches.

Avalanche Discussion

Numerous natural and triggered avalanches were reported every day since Saturday. The bulk of natural avalanche activity coincided with the heaviest precipitation rates and periods of high elevation rain. The final pulse of this intense, multi-day storm cycle will come Tuesday night, adding to impressive precipitation totals. Since January 1, the Heather Meadows weather station reported over 11in of water translating to over 5ft of new snow. Snow depths are well above average 4000ft and higher with 11-13ft of total snow on the ground. Below 3500ft, recent rains have caused significant melting of the shallow low-elevation snowpack. In addition to very dangerous avalanche conditions, non-avalanche hazards exist including tree well and deep snow immersion. Find out more information about deep snow safety HERE.
