A thin rain crust developed at all elevations Wednesday afternoon and evening, though this is confirmed only in the southern portion of the range and Crawford Notch. This crust will provide a poor bonding surface for new snow falling today. New snow sluffing from steep buttresses today could build these wind slabs more quickly than wind alone. The size of any new wind slabs is directly related to the new snow falling today. Older wind slabs appear to be settled and unreactive though exceptions may exist in pockets and in extreme terrain.
