In sintesi

You can trigger a large avalanche on slopes steeper than 35 degrees at all elevations and aspects. Dangerous avalanche conditions will develop rapidly on Sunday as recent lower density snow struggles to support heavier storm and wind-loaded snow. Propagating cracks, whumphs, and settlement as you travel all indicate unstable snow and remind you to dial it back on Sunday.

    We're concerned about the storm slab potential on Sunday. The ingredients are in place for increasingly dangerous conditions throughout the day. 12" of 8-9% density snow sits above a firm rain crust. Add some denser snow falling as temperatures warm up into the low 30's. Also, add in some uncertainty at the new/old snow interface where small surface hoar was found below treeline on Saturday. The result is widespread storm slabs you can easily trigger that may be 15-20" deep, can propagate widely, and run significant distances on the crust. At upper elevations, the moderate wind will focus avalanche danger more on wind-load lee slopes. Below the treeline there is also the possibility of a freezing rain layer developing early in the storm. Given a lot of complexity, keep things simple. Stick to slopes less than 35 degrees and limit your exposure to human-triggered avalanches from above.

    In some areas, the snow may remain unconsolidated. Dry Loose avalanches will run far and fast on the crust. Maintain awareness of objective hazards below you such as rocks, trees, or cliffs.

     

Avalanche Discussion

On Saturday, Mt. Hood Meadows reported 9" of 8.6% density snow falling late Thursday into Thursday evening. This produced limited results in morning control and in most cases did not exhibit slab character, prompting us to lower the danger rating to moderate at all elevations and adjust the avalanche problem size to small-large.

Thursday and Friday saw the first snowfall since a rain crust capped started our dry snow layering afresh. On Friday, reports from Mt Hood Meadows suggested the presence of wind-affected snow above treeline, a shallow loose dry avalanche problem near treeline, and slightly heavier snow forming a more cohesive slab below treeline.
