Avalanche Summary

You could trigger an avalanche on north through east to south-facing slopes where strong winds will drift the new snow into a thick, cohesive slab. An avalanche in the Gore Range can step down into a buried weak layer creating a large and dangerous slide. Before triggering one of these avalanches, you may not see signs of unstable snow like cracking. As temperatures warm throughout the day, look for moist snow surfaces where you find pinwheels or fan-like point releases of snow around darker objects on steep slopes. When you see these, it is time to seek colder snow, less than about 30 degrees, or call it a day.
