In sintesi

On Sunday avalanches will be possible at all elevations. With warm temperatures and rain, large wet loose avalanches will be possible below and near treeline on all aspects. Large cornices also exist and will be easily triggered. We may also see fresh wind slabs form in the alpine and at mid elevations depending on how much snow falls. If you see signs of unstable snow, seek lower angle terrain.

    On Saturday I observed several D1 wet loose avalanches on steep solar slopes. With more warm temps and rain in the forecast at low and mid elevations, large wet loose avalanches will be possible. Depending on how much rain falls overnight and on Sunday, wet slab avalanches might occur as well.

    For Sunday, monitor the depth of snow saturation. If you start to see roller balls on steep slopes and/or slushy wet snow, this is a sign that wet loose avalanches are possible.  These avalanches are usually easier to trigger on steep slopes. However, be mindful on any avalanche slopes  where terrain traps exist (i.e cliffs, gulleys, trees, open water). If you start to see signs of wet loose avalanches, move to slopes lower than 30 degrees and avoid avalanche run out zones.

     

  • Cornices

    On Saturday I observed parts of cornices breaking off and triggering wet loose avalanches below. Large cornices near and above treeline exist throughout our terrain. With continued warm temps, cornices will be easy to trigger. Avoid hanging out below these, and remember that cornices can break back farther than expected.  

  • Wind Slabs

    With a few inches of snow in the forecast, small wind slabs will be possible near and above treeline. These avalanches will be directely related to how much new snow has fallen. Monitor the depth of new snow, and look for areas where snow has accumulated (below ridgelines and areas that catch snow). Look for signs of wind slabs such as pillow like features and rippled snow surface. If you see any signs of unstable snow (cracking or recent slab avalanches), consider sticking to terrain lower than 30 degrees.  I suspect these will be small near treeline, but they may be larger in the alpine.
