In sintesi

Small slabs of unstable snow are possible today where wind drifted snow fills in near ridgetops above the rain/new snow line. Wet snow avalanches remain possible today with poor refreeze conditions last night and rain on snow/thunderstorms today. Move cautiously around avalanche terrain, especially if you encounter signs of unstable snow ranging from wind drifted snow, snow surface cracking, and recent avalanches to roller balls, pinwheels, and unsupportable wet snow.

The last daily forecast of the season is planned for Monday, April 13. We will provide intermittent General Avalanche Information bulletins through the end of April as conditions warrant.

    Ridgetop winds may drift new snow, filling in slopes below ridgetops and creating new wind slabs today. New wind slabs are expected to remain relatively small and to form only in locations where more than a couple of inches of new snow accumulate above 7,500' to 8,000'. Look for clues of newly formed wind slab in areas that have received new snow. Visible drifting snow, areas of locally deeper new snow on the downwind side of ridgetops, snow surface cracking, and recent avalanches are all signs of potentially unstable wind slab.  Move cautiously around avalanche terrain today, especially where signs of unstable snow are present.

    Poor snow-surface refreeze conditions occurred last night under cloud cover and above-freezing air temperatures. Areas of deeper wet snow are expected right from the start today. Rain on snow below 7,500' to 8,000' is expected to keep wet loose avalanche potential ongoing today. Roller balls and pinwheels indicate that the snow surface lacks strength and that wet loose avalanches could occur. Where the snow is deep and wet, or feels unsupportable, move cautiously around avalanche terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

March and April's record-setting heat and strong sun led to record setting snowmelt throughout the forecast area. Continuous snow cover is generally limited to NW-N-NE-E aspect terrain above 7,500' to 8,000'. Large areas of bare ground are present on these aspects at lower elevations. Most SE-S-SW-W aspect terrain is bare ground at all elevations. Many obstacles, such as dirt, rocks, stumps, and logs, have melted out of the snowpack. Areas with available snow and minimal walking are limited to the highest elevation trailheads within the forecast area.
