Wet avalanche concerns will linger until the snowpack fully refreezes. Limit your time spent on and under big slopes where the snowpack remains wet and unsupportable - or where you find sagging cornices, glide cracks, or chunks of snow clinging onto cliffs. Cooling temperatures and refreezing surfaces may set the stage for firm, challenging travel.

    Dropping freezing levels and refreezing surfaces are slowly reducing the likelihood of triggering wet avalanches. However, wet snow remains tricky, as meltwater can still move through the snowpack in unexpected ways until colder temperatures fully lock it up. Until the upper snowpack fully drains, you could still encounter a rogue wet avalanche or chunks of snow peeling off cliffs and corniced ridgelines. Watch what’s above you and monitor the thickness of the new surface crust as you travel. If you punch past your boot tops in wet snow, the snowpack needs more time to refreeze. Until it does, minimize your exposure to slopes steeper than 35 degrees.

Avalanche Discussion

A multi-day rain event and warm-up is finally coming to an end. Unsurprisingly, field observations were sparse while rain soaked the mountains. The highest precipitation totals fell closer to the Cascade Crest, where over 1 inch of rain fell on Friday alone at Rainy Pass,  with lower amounts further east in the zone. Saturday is shaping up to be a colder, drier day, so it will be a good opportunity to catalog the damage and reassess the snowpack after the recent wetting. 

Light snowfall likely fell across upper elevations as freezing levels started to drop on Friday. If you make it up high, watch for small, isolated wind slabs that may be peppered in alpine terrain.

On Tuesday, an observer in the Silver Star area found wet snow conditions and small wet loose avalanches running below cliffs.  Before the warmup, an NWAC forecaster in the Blue Lake area on Sunday reported minor cracking in wind-drifted snow and easy triggering of loose avalanches in sheltered terrain. The stormy week prior delivered 2-3 feet of snow over the March 8th crust. There was a favorable bond at this interface on Sunday, but with all the recent rainfall, we won't rule out wet slabs running on this crust.
