In sintesi

Triggering a slab avalanche two to three feet thick is possible in steep terrain. Travel one at a time on slopes over 30 degrees and avoid locations with signs of recently wind drifted snow. Natural avalanches are unlikely.

    Observers yesterday found that the snowpack structure remains poor in this zone. The reported collapses are a sure sign that the weak layers deep in the snowpack continue to be a concern. The overlying slab is gaining strength by the day but triggering a slab up to three feet thick remains possible, especially on windloaded aspects. Very steep slopes, especially those with signs of wind loading, will be of most concern during the heat of the day.

Avalanche Discussion

The dry conditions which followed storms in November led to the formation of weak faceted snow. Those weak layers were then blanketed by slabs of new and wind-blown snow during several storms starting around the Thanksgiving holiday and ending in early December. Widespread natural and human-triggered avalanche activity resulted from this poor snowpack structure, especially during the most recent stormy period from December 5th-10th. Avalanche danger has declined steadily since that last storm ended as snow gained strength and weak layers adjusted to the new load. No avalanche activity has been reported in this zone or even adjacent zones since December 10th. That being said, observations have been sparse and backcountry use has been minimal. This reduces our confidence in ruling out the potential for human triggering throughout all of the terrain given the poor snowpack structure.
