In sintesi

If you poke around among the higher ridgelines or in more complex terrain, you may find a few pockets of wind-drifted snow. These slabs are generally thin, not very wide, and hard to trigger. Don’t let one catch you by surprise and carry you over a cliff or into rocks.

The hazard from lingering small wind slabs seems fairly low. However, if you’re going to trigger an avalanche of consequences, this is most likely to be it. Keep an eye out for firmer, pillow-like, or textured drifts. These are the potential wind slabs. If you find one on a small slope, test it, and see if it cracks or fails under your weight.

Since we’re talking about generally small, low-likelihood slides, consider the consequences of being wrong. Would this tiny avalanche take you somewhere you don’t want to go? With so many exposed rocks and trees this time of year, even small avalanches can result in rough, unforgiving rides.

Avalanche Discussion

Happy Thanksgiving!

After a stormy few weeks, our weather pattern has finally quieted down. The last major snow and wind event occurred this past weekend. While the early season snowpack is impressive for late November, it is highly variable. Observations from the Washington Pass area show 3-5+ feet (80-150cm) of snow on the ground at middle and upper elevations. Lower in the terrain, the snowpack is much shallower. Make no mistake, it’s early season. Plenty of rocks, trees, logs, and bushes make travel a bit more challenging. Give yourself extra time to manage these potential hazards.

We have limited information from around the zone, so it’s hard to say much about the snowpack. However, generally, recent observations and snowpack tests have not highlighted any significant weaklayers. It’s possible colder temperatures and a lack of rain, helped the East North zone escape the crusts reported from other nearby forecast zones.
