That pesky surface hoar layer buried up to 2’ deep is still guilty of causing human triggered avalanches. This will be the main concern today at mid and upper elevations. On Sunday we heard reports of small human triggered avalanches in the Tincan trees. It seems like this layer is more widespread on sheltered slopes between 1,500' and 2,500’ and harder to find on slopes exposed to the wind. It will be even easier to trigger this weak layer where wind slabs exist.
The tricky thing is knowing where these weak layers are and how weak they are. Traveling tests such as hand pits may or may not produce concerning results. Listen for whumpfs and look for shooting cracks underneath you. Test small safe slopes to see if you can trigger a small avalanche. The main point is that just because you don’t find them does not mean they are not there. Rather than trying to outsmart the problem it is safer to enjoy soft snow in less consequential terrain.
