    What and where is it: Over the past three days the forecast area has received more than 11 inches of new snow (including 5.3 inches yesterday), and strong northwest winds have redistributed much of it. Expect wind slabs on northeast, east and south aspects with the largest likely on steep middle elevation slopes. In the most sheltered areas, slabs may be up to 2 feet thick.How can you recognize it: When visibility allows, wind slabs can be easy to spot: look for smooth, clean, bright-white drifted snow that contrasts with textured, wind-affected surfaces and dull older snow. Keep in mind that many slabs will be stiff or hard, and may not show obvious warning signs like shooting cracks. Be especially cautious around deeper drifts on steep slopes, particularly those more than a foot thick that feel hollow or drum-like. How can you manage it: Manage your exposure by identifying and avoiding wind-loaded slopes, including the gentler terrain below large start zones. Manage risk by traveling one at a time through exposed areas. When transitioning from an area heavily wind-affected snow surface onto a softer drifted wind slab, dig into the snow and investigate carefully before committing.

Avalanche Discussion

Uncertainty in today’s forecast centers on the reactivity and distribution of any remaining wind slabs after many hours of strong northwest winds. With very low-density snow, upper elevations may be largely scoured and wind-affected. Where slabs did build, especially at wind protected middle elevations, it is possible to find firm wind slabs that are reactive to a human trigger and capable of producing a large avalanche in the right location. It’s also possible that remaining slabs are generally stiff and stubborn, requiring a more specific trigger point. Both scenarios are plausible today and should be weighed when traveling in avalanche terrain.

Overall, stability is improving. After many hours of strong wind, there is less snow available for transport and wind speeds are dropping today, greatly reducing the likelihood of natural avalanches. The primary concern now is human-triggered wind slabs in pockets of wind-sheltered, drifted snow.

Vermont: 12/24/25 we received three Vermont observations that show the recent snow is reactive on top of the recent rain crust. Smugglers Notch reported weakness in tests, Jay Peak had a small human triggered slab, and Mount Mansfield had cracking and multiple small avalanches. Green Mountains North.
