A favourable avalanche situation will prevail.
Individual avalanche prone locations are to be found on very steep shady slopes. Older wind slabs are to be evaluated with care and prudence in terrain where there is a danger of falling. Avalanches can additionally in very isolated cases be released in the old snowpack in particular on little used shady slopes. Extremely slopes are to be traversed by snow sport participants one at a time.
Snowpack The snow cover surface over widespread areas bears heavy influence from wind and sun. Only on wind-protected shady slopes at elevated altitudes is there loosely-packed snow in some places. On the northern flank of the Alps there are expansively metamorphosed (faceted) layers deeply embedded inside the snow cover in some places on north-facing slopes. In the southern Valais and in Grisons, in addition, the entire snow cover over widespread areas is expansively metamorphosed (faceted) and loosely-packed. Avalanche triggerings which fracture in more deeply embedded layers inside the snowpack have been reported only very seldom during the last two weeks. Snow depths in the Swiss Alps continue to be significantly below average. In the recorded values at the measurement stations on flat fields at heightened altitudes, snow depths attain only approximately half of the customary values. Observed weather review Saturday, 04.03.2023 Nighttime skies in the mountains were clear. During the daytime hours it was predominantly sunny, there was high fog in some places below 1600 m in the northern regions. Fresh snow - Temperature At midday at 2000 m, between -1 °C in the northern regions and +2 °C in the southern regions. Wind Winds at elevated altitudes were blowing intermittently at moderate strength from northeasterly directions, in the other regions of Switzerland winds were light. Weather forecast through Sunday, 05.03.2023 Following a night of clear skies it is expected to be sunny in the mountains during the daytime hours. On the northern flank of the Alps the high fogbanks have a ceiling between 1600 and 1900 m. Fresh snow - Temperature At midday at 2000 m, between -2 °C in the western and the southern regions and -4 °C in the eastern regions. Wind Winds will be blowing at light to moderate strength, predominantly from westerly to southwesterly directions, from northerly to northwesterly directions in the high alpine regions. Outlook through Tuesday, 07.03.2023 On Monday it is expected to be quite sunny in the mountains. In the furthermost southern regions skies will be partly overcast. A small amount of precipitation is possible. On Tuesday in the inneralpine regions and in the south, it will be generally sunny, in the northern regions variably cloudy but it will remain dry. At heightened altitudes a moderate westerly to southwesterly wind will be blowing, in some places blowing at strong velocity. The avalanche danger situation is expected to remain favourable.
