Avalanche Activity

The wind has transported the loosely bonded old snow. There is a danger of falling on the hard crust.

The wind was strong to storm force in the regions exposed to the foehn wind. In the last two days mostly small wind slabs formed in particular at high altitude. The wind slabs can be released in all aspects. As the temperature drops hardly any more moist and wet avalanches are to be expected. The weather will be clear. The surface of the snowpack has frozen to form a strong crust and will soften later than the day before. In steep terrain there is a danger of falling on the hard snow surface.

Snowpack Structure

The snowpack is favourably layered. This applies in particular at low and intermediate altitudes. Outgoing longwave radiation during the night was good. The surface of the snowpack has frozen to form a strong crust. At intermediate and high altitudes there is more snow than usual.
